Welcome at the website Doctors with Autism. Why this website? Because there are also doctors with autism. Even though it seems there aren’t. Most doctors with an autism diagnosis hide their diagnosis. I am such a doctor with the diagnosis autism (Asperger’s Syndrome). When I received the diagnosis, I had already passed the age of 40. I had been working for years as a primary care physician (also called Family Doctor or General Practitioner). Autism is something you are born with, so I had been working as a physician for years, unaware of my autism. So a lot of questions arose that I had to think about. I have talked to (and e-mailed with) a lot of people with autism. These conversations and e-mails eventually put me up to developing this website.
As a diagnosis, autism has only recently gained familiarity with the general public. In the past, autism was often thought to coincide with mental retardation. This appears not to be the case; autism also occurs in (highly) intelligent people. Women can also have autism. Lately, more and more intelligent adult men and women have been being diagnosed with autism. By the time of their diagnosis, they’ve often been engaged professionally for years. In my case not – and thus not necessarily – in ICT.
This website is especially meant for doctors with an autism diagnosis. Please use the contact page for any questions, ideas or suggestions.
